What to Expect When at a Beginner’s Cheerleading Camp

Whether you are new to cheerleading, or you have been doing it throughout your school years for many years, as summer approaches, anyone who is going to cheerleading camp gets excited.  There are different types of cheerleading camps, and different things to expect from each one.

Several types of cheerleader camps exist, and they cover the same training basics pertaining to technique, flexibility, and form. However, different camps have different internal cultures, and some are more conducive to the development of lasting friendships and self-confidence than others.

There are 3 basic cheerleading camps that you can attend and they include a traditional camp, private camp, or a resort camp.  These different types of cheerleading camps will indicate what you will need to pack, how expensive it will be, and how hard you will be working at routines during your time there.  There is so much that you can research to find out what to expect from each one, however, through this remember that it is important to have fun, learn the routines, and work hard while you are there.  This will help you to get through the camp and come out more experienced in the cheerleading field.

Traditional Camps

Traditional cheerleading camp is the basic camp that most individuals attend.  This camp is the one where there are multiple different cheerleading squads that attend this.  This can be a fun way to compete while you are at camp, and learn how to conduct different types of competitions and routines.  There are a lot of cheerleading squads who are not very friendly during the long camping days, and this can make it difficult for a team to enjoy their time at camp during their stay.

Because of the unfriendly atmosphere, it can cause for some pretty hardcore competitions to arise among the different squads.  So, if you are alright with competing and arguing about it, then the traditional camp is the way to go.  There might be some squads that are willing to be friendly in their competing, however, it is hard to conduct this type of friendly behavior when there are so many cheerleading squads looking to win, win, win.  This can become an issue with enjoying your time at cheerleading camp.

Private Camps

When you attend a private cheerleading camp, you can expect to build up your team spirit to the highest degree.  These camps promote the safety of the team as they perform and teach them the proper leadership skills that they require when becoming a cheerleader.  There are so many more options to gain, especially when it comes to coaches.

There are fewer squads that are combined in a private cheerleading camp, and this allows for coaches to help each team, and each team member separately, to learn the abilities they need to properly lead their teams in their school spirit.  They help you build the skill that is required to conduct the cheerleading movements and stunts that they will perform during each cheer session.  Gaining that one-on-one experience from other experienced individuals will be able to help build your team up and lead them on to the success that they require.

Resort Camps

If you are looking to find a cheerleading experience like no other, then a resort cheerleading camp is the way to go.  You might have to pay extra to attend one, however, the benefits that a cheerleader will reap are phenomenal.  These camps are usually spent at places such as country clubs or water parks.  This gives the cheerleader the relaxation, and the motivation, that they need to kick in that team spirit.

It also helps the team to bond together and works stronger as a team and group, which will further expand their abilities to perform properly.  These resorts allow for the cheerleader to build up their strong leadership skills, and come together as a group to bring the school spirit out of the other individuals that they will be cheering in front of.  Even though it is a bit more costly, any cheerleader will tell you that a resort cheerleading camp is a way to do it.

5 Roles Of A Cheerleader

When it comes to cheerleading, there are 5 different roles that a cheerleader needs to strive to accomplish while they are at camp.  These roles include ambassador, entertainer, crowd leader, athlete, and spirit raiser.  If a cheerleader is looking to raise the level of school spirit within their school and community, then mastering these different roles will help a cheerleader reach this level.  Cheerleading isn’t only about cheering and entertaining a crowd, it also involves being a good athlete.  It is important to try and remain physically capable to conduct the roles of a cheerleader.  Staying fit will help you to achieve the stunts that you are looking to accomplish for your team.

It is a cheerleader’s main job to obtain positivity, therefore, remaining positive is what will help establish a perfect role model for those that a cheerleader is performing for.  It is important to be flexible as a cheerleader and to develop the proper strength for the job.  With these physical activities, there needs to be a lot of knowledge of safety.  Being safe is key to performing properly and getting the job done, while you remain safe.  It is easy to get injured during cheerleading routines, and knowing how to properly keep yourself from harm is going to help you become successful in cheerleading in the long run.

Being prepared for public performance is a hard thing to accomplish.  There are so many who will end up developing stage fright due to having to perform in front of a large group of individuals.  Even though this can be the case for so many, cheerleading camp helps to teach a cheerleader to grow passed this issue and build themselves up with confidence.  If a cheerleader is going to camp for several years, then the summertime is perfect for them to re-build their confidence as well, and learn new things that might have developed over time.

Conclusion

In conclusion, cheerleading camp is an important time in a cheerleader’s life, no matter if you are new to the sport or have been doing it for a long time.  There are several benefits that come with attending cheerleading camp, and it shouldn’t be something that a cheerleader passes up.  When camp begins, it is important for a cheerleader to attend and develop the knowledge, skills, leadership, and team spirit that is needed to become a properly trained cheerleader.

Learn to chant while you are moving, learn the leadership abilities it takes to take control of an audience, learn how to entertain throughout your performance, learn how to properly conduct the moves, techniques, and stunts that are required, and learn how to remain safe while you are conducting all of these different types of topics.  There is so much that is beneficial to a cheerleader when they attend camp, and it is an experience that they do not want to miss out on.

Whether you attend a traditional, private, or resort type of cheerleading camp, there is always something that one can learn from any experience.  There are always new additions to cheerleading as each year passes, so whether you are new to the sport, or have participated in it for several years, you will always be able to take new lessons from it.  Cheerleading camp is not something that any individual wants to miss out on, and it will help build the character, leadership, entertainment, school spirit, energy, and safety measures that you will be able to develop from this amazing experience.
